How to Tell Slavic Languages Apart

While diving into Slavic languages, it's easy to be bewildered by the apparent similarities among them. However, with a keen eye for detail, you can distinguish these languages based on unique characteristics.



1. Polish: The Most Easily-Distinguishable


Among the Slavic languages, Polish stands out as a great starting point for differentiation. It employs the letter W and intriguing digraphs like SZ or CZ. Additionally, you'll encounter special characters like Ą, Ę, Ł, Ź and Ż.


2. Czech and Slovak: Many Modified Letters as Clues


When you encounter so many modified letters, you're likely dealing with Czech or Slovak. Czech introduces characters like Ě, Ř and Ů, while Slovak utilises Ä, Ĺ, Ľ, Ô and Ŕ, setting them apart.


3. Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian: Subtle Nuances


Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian may appear similar initially but close observation will unveil the differences. A trick lies in examining i/y pairs and some unique letters.


  • Ukrainian has І/И, Ґ, Є, Ї

  • Russian has И/Ы

  • Belarusian has І/Ы and Ў.


4. Bulgarian: A Quirky Case


Bulgarian adds a quirky twist to the Slavic puzzle. While Ъ isn't exclusive to Bulgarian, it frequently appears in the language. While Russian also has Ъ, but rarely uses it.


5. Unveiling the Balkan Trio: Slovenian, Croatian, and Serbian


Slovenian, Croatian and Serbian present another challenge due to their overlapping features. All three feature Ć, Š, and Ž. Yet, Croatian and Serbian also have Ć and Đ, setting them apart from Slovenian. For a decisive clue, the appearance of Ђ and Ћ signifies Serbian Cyrillic.


6. The Macedonian: A Cyrillic Tell


Macedonian language brings its own distinctive Cyrillic flair. When spotting Ѓ, Ѕ, and Ќ in Cyrillic text, you've found the telltale signs of the Macedonian language.



You now possess a sharper eye for the nuances that set these diverse tongues apart, you'll find it easier to unravel the linguistic tapestry of this rich and diverse group. Each language leaves its unique imprint, making the journey through Slavic languages a rewarding linguistic adventure.
